We employed Richard Affleck Building during 2014 to build our ‘forever’ home on our farm in Waikoikoi, West Otago. Our aim was to build an efficient house that would serve not only us but the generations to come. We had a comprehensive direction and design when we approached Richard to build our house and wanted a building team that would go beyond a standard building approach. We chose Richard because when we sat down to discuss this project with him in detail, he was very receptive, and had a considered response to the unique design challenges we had.
Richard put in a lot of time and effort listening to what we wanted. He showed us around his own home, and made some excellent suggestions regarding building materials prior to and after consent, which we are really pleased we went with. We didn’t want just an ordinary farmhouse, and Richard was not afraid of working with new materials. We could see that he made an effort to research and further his knowledge about the materials we wanted to use. He was open to any request such as personalising wardrobe spaces and modifying our architraves to include extensions to both the top and bottom of the vertical members. The listening and advising did not stop throughout the entire project and it has been greatly appreciated.
We were always welcome on site by Richard and the boys, and we felt that we could voice any concerns and that they would be dealt with promptly and professionally. Richard was always easy to contact and would keep us informed as to progress on a regular basis.
We were particularly impressed with the attention to details. Even the smallest things, such as the architraves and the kitchen/family room roof battening. One particular instance to do with our architraves and skirting, Richard consulted with us about changing the thickness of the architraves around our front door, to ensure the detailing would standout and not be ‘lost’ where they met the ceiling battening.
Reliability has been a key feature. When something is agreed on or organised then we knew that it would be done and done properly.
The site and our building was kept tidy at all times.
